From "Agent Washing" to AgentOps: What CTOs Need to Build Now

AI agents are rapidly becoming the new interface between intent and execution—scheduling work, calling tools, generating code, and increasingly coordinating across systems. But the last 48 hours of coverage shows a tell: the market is sprinting ahead of the operating model. For CTOs, the near-term advantage won’t come from declaring “we have agents,” but from building the technical and organizational scaffolding that makes agents safe, auditable, and actually useful.

First, the hype is peaking and leaders are starting to call it out. Dell Technologies CTO John Roese warns of “tremendous agent washing,” arguing the real potential of agents is only now being realized—and could even extend to agents managing humans in workflows [1]. In parallel, funding momentum is chasing “vibe-coding” and AI-native development experiences (TechCrunch on Emergent’s $70M raise [2]). Put together: teams will soon face pressure to adopt agentic tooling quickly, even when the underlying controls (identity, permissions, evaluation, rollback) are immature.

Third, governance is tightening from two directions: standards and policy. For CTOs building consumer products (or platforms used by consumers), agentic features that personalize, persuade, or automate actions will face rising scrutiny around duty of care, age-appropriate design, and explainability.

What CTOs should do now: Treat this as an “AgentOps” moment. (1) Build an agent control plane: identity/roles for agents, least-privilege tool access, policy-based execution, and immutable audit logs. (2) Invest in evaluation and incident response for agents (prompt/tool regressions, unsafe actions, data leakage) the same way you do for SRE—define SLOs for agent reliability and “blast radius” limits. (3) Create a clear human-in-the-loop contract: which workflows are advisory vs. autonomous, and who is accountable for outcomes. (4) Anchor security in verifiable components—secure enclaves/HSM-backed keys and hardware-rooted attestation where appropriate—because “trust me” won’t scale in regulated or geopolitically sensitive environments.

The winners in the next wave won’t be the teams with the most agent demos; they’ll be the teams that can prove their agents are controlled, compliant, and operationally boring. If you can pair fast experimentation (vibe-coding velocity) with disciplined governance (standards-aligned security and clear supervision models), you’ll ship agentic capabilities that your board, regulators, and engineers can all live with.
